pretty restaurant interior, food came out quickly, service was very nice. would be a great date night perilla oil noodles - 1000% my favorite thing tonight - so refreshing and different, i would make a res just to come back and have another plate octopus tteokbokki - so yummy! a bit spicy but very good hojok galbi - one of their signatures, it was good but imo didn't stand out a ton potato pancake - my least fav even tho this was recommended to us, maybe a personal preference
There are so many Korean restaurants in NYC so I tend to be picky with my evaluation but this place was really good- the ambiance was balanced, food portion and quality passes the test (truffle potato pancake particularly was amazing), and the service was decent. You will get better army stew soup compared to other restaurants in NYC but i was hoping it could be just a bit less salty- but overall, i was satisfied to the point that i am willing to take my non-Korean friends here and come back!
Got the chance to come here as the result of managing to get a reservation after someone cancelled theirs last minute. I wasn't entirely sure what I was expecting walking in, but I left with a very strong feeling of satisfaction. The ambiance of the restaurant gave it a modernized yet formal vibe, and I remembered the lighting of the place feeling very cozy. The staff were very friendly, and each dish tasted even better than the last. Unfortunately I was only able to get photo for the sweet fried chicken, but it was exceptionally good and hard to resist as I waited for the rest of the food to arrive. The other dishes I recalled having were the garlic pork jowl, which was a bit savory for my taste but still really good, and the hojok galbi, which had a nice texture and flavor to it. The food itself was relatively expensive, but the servings were large and we had enough for leftovers between two of us. This was overall a very pleasant experience, and a place I would happily go to again if given the opportunity.
i thought this trendy korean spot was gonna be one of those places that only looked good for instagram, but i was pleasantly surprised at how wrong i was! every dish here is packed with flavor, and aesthetic to boot. hojokban is a vibey little spot in nomad with reasonably priced entrees served in decently sized portions. my friend and i dined in on a tuesday evening and the restaurant was absolutely packed. we tried the following: - spicy bbq galbi: my fave dish of the evening! so tender and packed w that korean bbq flavor. i didn't know i needed to eat galbi with fresh burrata before this. - ramyun fried rice: my friend's fave of the evening. this was the dish i thought was gonna be gimmicky but it was so bomb! - ssook got salad: this was super refreshing on a summer night and definitely a good palette cleanser. also worth mentioning the complementary kimchi banchan was a standout! can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu.
Hojokban is one of the top restaurants I've been to in KTown. Everything here was delicious, though some dishes are certainly more worth the price than other dishes. My favorite was the tteokbokki by far. It had a unique smokiness to it, and the its richness paired well with the refreshing squid yuja salad, which had a dressing that reminded me of the pepper salmon I always get at AYCE sushi. The truffle potato pancake had a great texture and tasted just like potato chips -- if that's your thing. I also wasn't amazed by the perilla oil noodles, though they were also tasty. I know Hojokban is partially known for their galbi, but I actually wasn't a huge fan; I prefer traditional galbi more. While the meat was very tender, it tasted like meatloaf to me. Aside from the food, the service and ambience were also great. I'd highly recommend coming here for the tteokbokki.
Hojokban offers a modern take on classic Korean dishes and delivers flavors as delicious as they are visually stunning. 10/10 recommend to anyone who is in the area. We started off with the truffle potato pancake. It has an extremely crispy exterior with savory and umami notes from the parmesan and bacon bits. Very light and fried with clean oil. Ramyun fried rice did a nice job of capturing a universal Korean experience: mixing rice with the broth of shin ramen. Was a bit on the oilier side but still very aromatic and tasty. The Hojok Galbi was more akin to Texas BBQ-style beef ribs than any Korean flavor. Very heavy on the pepper and very savory. 10/10.
We had a truly standout meal at Hojokban. While it wasn't cheap by any means, it all depends on what you order, and the portions were actually pretty sizable. For our starters, the squid yuja salad was a light and refreshing option to offset some of the heavier, meatier dishes we ordered. The octopus tteokbokki was delicious and filled with perfectly cooked baby octopus. Everyone comes here for the Hojok galbi, and it's easy to see why. The short rib steak was so juicy and saucy and tender, and the scallion salad really complemented all that meat. A standout dish for sure. Honestly, though, the perilla oil noodles may have edged out the galbi to be my favorite bite of the night, despite their simplicity and comparative lack of flash. I'm a sucker for a great cold noodle dish, and the sauce was deliciously umami while the buckwheat noodles were fresh with a good chew. The galbi is likely a one-and-done experience because it would burn a hole in my wallet, but the noodles are a dish I'd return for over and over again.
I came here for dinner on a Saturday. Definitely need reservations beforehand. The ambiance is nice and modern. I came with a group of 4 so we tried a bunch of dishes. Squid Yuja Salad--light and refreshing. Great appetizer to start the meal. Octopus Tteokbboki--the rice cakes were chewy, great texture. Lots of baby octopus. Good balance of spicy, salty and sweet. Truffle potato pancake--truffle flavor was good. Potato pancakes were crispy. Would get again. Hojok Galbi--had high expectations for this dish. The portion is great for the price but was a little let down. The marinade was OK and meat was a little dry. A bit unmemorable in my opinion. Would come back again for some comfort Korean food.
On a Thursday evening, my girlfriend and I were in the city and wanted a meal before heading to the Odesza concert. We had a reservation for 5:00 pm, but due to traffic, we weren't going to make it on time. However, after calling Hojokban, they were more than willing to change our reservation to 5:30, which was great. Once we arrived, we were seated right away, and I loved the atmosphere--it was very cozy and would be a perfect date night spot. We already knew what we were going to order once we got there. I got the Ramyun Fried Rice without bacon, and my girlfriend got the Jongjorim Fried Rice. My dish was very flavorful, probably one of the best fried rice I've had in a while. It was spicy, which I liked and was pleasantly surprised by. We were also given side dishes like kimchi, which they kept refilling as I ate. My girlfriend loved her fried rice as well. Overall, we loved our food, and the service was amazing. We would definitely come here again and recommend it to anyone.
Overall 4.5/5 Love the modern take to Korean food here at hojokban and I'm glad I came here 6+ months after they open b/c my friend didn't think the food was as good as it was today so they def improved Our fave was the hojok galbi 5/5: meat was sooo tender and juicy!! Highly reco this Ramyun fried rice 4.5/5: the ramen + rice combo was delicious here!! Octopus tteokbokki 4/5: octopus itself was delicious but only 5 pieces Garlic pork jowl 3/5: this was not bad but not tasty either Perilla oil noodle 4.5/5: usually not a cold noodle fan but this was very flavorful and noodles had a nice bounce Drinks - mostly mediocre Plum sour 4/5 Berry ruby 2/5 (taste like cough medicine?) Last but not least I would not get the dessert here. Sikhye bingsu 2/5: not b/c I'm not a fan of sweet potato but the shaved ice itself is not paper thin - but maybe someone who likes sweet potato and red bean they would find this most tasty?
